Create a retro mobile game from scratch in 8 hours

We are back with a second edition of “Create a retro mobile game from scratch in 8 hours” where you’ll learn how to create a fully functional 2D retro game.
Come to Transforma bcn and leave with your own video game!
The workshop is composed of 2 different parts (pixel art and programming) which can be attended independently, although we recommend to participate to both of them to gain a more comprehensive insight on the topic (learning some basic coding skills for an artist will improve communication with developers, and vice versa!).

PROGRAM:

Part 1 (5/12, 10h-14h): GAMES & PIXEL ART. Create 2D art for a mobile game (infinite scroller)
Workshop Level: simple
Description: With this workshop you will dig deep into pixel art, understanding its power specially in the indie-game scene. From the basics of pixel art illustration to which are the best tools and how to use them, you will be trained about the essential process of making 2D game artwork assets for a casual mobile game.
Requirements: – Each participant should bring her/his personal laptop.
– No specific art skills required although illustration background and/or overall graphic design knowledge will be helpful.
– All participants should have installed Adobe Photoshop, (any version)
Language: English
Speaker: Iñaki Díaz is a graphic and web designer that left everything to work in his true passion: videogames. Co-founder of indie studio Appnormals Team, he has several years of experience as game designer and professional pixel artist, working in both personal projects and as freelance 2D game artist with clients worldwide.

Part 2 (12/12, 10h-14h): DEVELOP your mobile game from the scratch for iOS and Android
Workshop Level: simple
Description: This workshop will guide participants through the creation of their own mobile video game for iOS or Android. After a short theoretical overview about the main principles underlying game design, with a particular focus on mobile technology, participants will go through the development process of a simple and fully functional 2D game.
Requirements: – Each participant should bring her/his personal laptop.
– No specific programming skills required. Familiarity with any programming language is a plus (i.e. a basic programming knowledge will make it easier to follow the workshop)
– To save time, participants should download and install the latest version of Unity 5 Personal Edition (free) prior to the workshop.
Speaker: Alberto Betella is a postdoctoral researcher at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona with more than a decade of experience in the development of web and mobile technological solutions. He has fond memories of video games from the 8 and 16-bits eras, which he played throughout his childhood. These joyful remembrances led to a more recent interest in the creation of modern game experiences that merge an authentic retro feeling with latest-generation interaction paradigms
Language: English

The workshop is supported by GAME BCN
